Bending Without Breaking

Palm tree bending in the wind under storm clouds

For a long time, I thought being strong meant not bending.

If plans changed, I pushed harder. If my body told me to slow down, I ignored it. If something didn’t go my way, I held on tighter.

It took me a while to notice what that was costing me. The more rigid I got, the more things seemed to snap: my patience, my energy, sometimes my relationships.

Then I started paying attention to trees on windy days. The ones that last aren’t the stiff ones. They sway. They give a little with the storm, and when it passes, they’re still standing.

Here’s what bending looks like for me these days:

  1. Adjusting the plan instead of quitting it. If I can’t do the full workout, I do part of it.

  2. Listening to my body. A sore knee isn’t weakness. It’s information.

  3. Letting some things go. Not every disagreement needs to be won.

I’m still learning this one. My first instinct is still to dig in. But I’m starting to see that bending isn’t giving up. It’s how we stay standing.

Where in your life could you bend a little instead of breaking?
